“January 8 — The Day the World Lost a Musical Giant”

Today we honor Andraé Crouch (1942–2015), a Grammy-winning gospel singer, composer, and choir director whose music touched millions of hearts worldwide. Known as a pioneer of contemporary gospel, his songs like “My Tribute,” “Soon and Very Soon,” “Jesus Is the Answer,” and “The Blood Will Never Lose Its Power” remain staples in churches around the globe.

Crouch was remarkable for bridging communities through music — his compositions became popular in churches of all races, and his influence even reached secular music, working with legends like Michael Jackson and Madonna, and contributing to soundtracks for films including The Lion King and Free Willy.

He began performing with his sister Sandra as Andraé Crouch and the Disciples, traveling in a van and sharing their music far and wide. His dedication earned him seven Grammy Awards, a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, and a lasting legacy that continues to inspire gospel and contemporary artists alike.Despite facing serious health challenges, including throat cancer, Crouch remained committed to music and ministry. He served as pastor of his church in Los Angeles, where he also broke tradition by ordaining his twin sister as co-pastor, believing that God’s work knows no gender.

Andraé Crouch’s life reminds us that music has the power to unite, heal, and inspire — a gift that lives on long after his passing.
