
Tom Noonan, the veteran character actor best known for his role as Cain in RoboCop 2, has died at the age of 74. His death was announced by filmmaker Fred Dekker in a Facebook post shared on Feb. 18, revealing that Noonan passed away on Feb. 14. Dekker, who directed Noonan in The Monster Squad, paid tribute to the late actor, calling him “the proverbial gentleman and scholar.”
Noonan gained widespread recognition for portraying Francis Dollarhyde in Manhunter and the villain Cain in RoboCop 2. Over a decades-long career, he became known for his commanding screen presence and memorable performances in films such as Last Action Hero and Heat. He also appeared in Synecdoche, New York, further showcasing his versatility as a performer.
Dekker reflected warmly on working with Noonan in The Monster Squad, praising his dedication despite the physically demanding Frankenstein makeup designed by special effects legend Stan Winston. He recalled how impressed he had been by Noonan’s earlier performance in Manhunter and described securing him for the role as a long shot that ultimately paid off.
In addition to acting, Noonan was an accomplished filmmaker. He directed and starred in several independent films, including What Happened Was… and The Wife. Across his career, he accumulated 84 film and television credits, with later appearances including the TV adaptation of 12 Monkeys and his final on-screen role in the 2017 film Wonderstruck.
