If a snake wraps itself around your dog, it’s a serious emergency that requires quick but careful action. The first thing to remember is to stay calm. Panic can make the situation worse for both you and your pet. Assess the situation from a safe distance—identify whether the snake is constricting (like a python) or potentially venomous. Your goal is to act swiftly without putting yourself in direct danger.
If the snake is constricting your dog, time is critical because it can restrict breathing. Try to distract or loosen the snake rather than pulling it forcefully, which can tighten its grip. Using a long object like a stick, gently attempt to unwind the snake starting from its tail. If water is available, pouring it over the snake may sometimes encourage it to loosen its hold. Avoid grabbing the snake near its head, as this increases the risk of a bite.
While helping your dog, protect yourself at all times. Wear gloves if available and keep your face and hands away from the snake’s head. Even non-venomous snakes can bite when threatened. If another person is nearby, ask them to assist by calling for help or bringing tools, but make sure they also keep a safe distance. Your safety matters just as much as your dog’s.
Once your dog is free, immediately check for injuries. Look for bite marks, swelling, bleeding, or signs of breathing difficulty. Even if the snake was non-venomous, internal injuries from constriction can occur. Keep your dog as still and calm as possible, and transport them to a veterinarian right away. Quick medical attention can be life-saving.
Prevention is equally important. Keep your yard clean, avoid tall grass, and remove places where snakes can hide. When walking your dog, stay on clear paths and keep them on a leash in snake-prone areas. Learning about local snake species can also help you respond more effectively in an emergency.
