Tommy DeCarlo, who achieved fame as the lead vocalist for the iconic rock band Boston, has died at the age of 60 following a heartbreaking battle with brain cancer.
The rock star’s family confirmed the tragic news on Monday, sharing a deeply moving tribute on social media.“It is with heavy hearts that we share the passing of our Dad, Tommy DeCarlo, on Monday, March 9th, 2026,” his family wrote in a statement on Instagram.
“After being diagnosed with brain cancer last September, he fought with incredible strength and courage right up until the very end. During this difficult time, we kindly ask that friends and fans respect our family’s privacy as we grieve and support one another.”
Following DeCarlo’s devastating diagnosis last September, a GoFundMe campaign was launched to assist his family with mounting medical bills. On the fundraising page, his relatives provided detailed insight into his fight with the illness and the severe challenges he faced.
“In late September, Dad suffered a sudden brain bleed and underwent an emergency craniotomy,” the GoFundMe description explained. “During surgery, doctors discovered two melanoma masses on his brain and another spot on his lungs.”

The family noted that he miraculously recovered from the initial surgery and began treatment, but before he could finish it, he suffered a second brain bleed. This resulted in a month-long hospitalization from November 27th to December 27th.
“Since then he has completed acute inpatient therapy and is currently back on track with treatments from his oncology team,” the page detailed at the time. “Our Dad is strong. He is a fighter. And he’s giving this battle everything he’s got — but he needs your help on this one.”
DeCarlo stepped into the role of Boston’s lead singer in 2007, taking over from the band’s original frontman, Brad Delp, following Delp’s tragic death by suicide.
At the time, the 42-year-old DeCarlo was famously working at a Home Depot when he received a life-changing phone call from Boston founder Tom Scholz, inviting him to go on tour with the group.
Boston, renowned for timeless rock anthems such as More Than a Feeling, Peace of Mind, and Amanda, has been a staple in the music industry for more than 50 years.
Rest in peace, Tommy DeCarlo. Our thoughts are with his family and loved ones.
